The Benefits of Aloe for Your Health

In today’s blog post, I want to share with you the amazing benefits of aloe, a plant that has been used for centuries in health care products. Aloe produces two substances – clear gel and yellow latex – that have different uses and benefits.

Firstly, let’s talk about aloe gel. This clear gel is primarily used topically in creams and ointments to treat burns, psoriasis and even acne. It has been proven to shorten the duration of wound healing for first- and second-degree burns and can also promote wound healing. In addition, research suggests that when combined with prescription acne medication, aloe gel can be more effective in reducing acne.

For those struggling with psoriasis, using aloe extract cream can help reduce redness, scaling, itching and inflammation. It may take some time to see results, but consistent use can lead to improvements in your skin.

Aloe also has antiviral properties that make it effective in treating herpes simplex virus. Applying a cream containing aloe extract can help lesions heal sooner.

In addition to its topical uses, aloe can also be taken orally as a laxative to treat constipation. However, it is important to note that while aloe gel is generally safe when used as recommended, oral use of aloe latex can pose safety concerns. Taking 1 gram per day for several days can cause kidney damage and even be fatal.

Our Take on Aloe

After reviewing the research on the use of aloe for various conditions, our take is that while aloe gel is generally safe and effective for topical use, it is best to avoid using aloe latex orally. Unprocessed aloe latex contains chemicals that have been linked to cancer and processed versions may also have cancer-causing compounds. It is important to follow recommended doses and consult with a healthcare professional before taking aloe orally.

Safety and Side Effects

As mentioned earlier, aloe gel is generally safe when applied topically and can effectively treat skin conditions. However, oral use of aloe latex or whole-leaf extract can be unsafe, especially in high doses. Taking 1 gram per day for several days can lead to acute kidney failure and even be fatal. Aloe latex may also have the potential to cause cancer and can cause side effects such as abdominal cramps and diarrhoea. It is not recommended for children under the age of 12.

Interactions with Other Medications

If you are taking anticoagulants or anti-platelet drugs, herbs or supplements that reduce blood clotting, it is important to note that oral use of aloe may also slow down blood clotting.
